There I sat in my living room, holding my newborn special-needs daughter diagnosed with FAS. She was on 24hr GJ tube feedings, an apnea monitor, with an ASD heart defect and severe sensory issues. Angel was fresh out of the NICU and I was completely and utterly overwhelmed and scared. Sitting there with me were 4 Early Intervention ladies all with a plan of action to help our little Angel and none of which I completely understood. I’m just a mom after all. Granted, I’m a mom of 8, a Foster and Adoptive mom so I’m skilled in trauma and all that entails but to say I was unprepared, is an understatement. Through those 3 years of Early Intervention, Kelli quickly became more than just my daughter’s Occupational therapist. She became my prayer partner and my friend, my confidant and my ally. I realized I needed and relied on her every bit as much as my daughter. I remember in my frustration her taking on the phone calls with specialists, advocating side-by-side with me for my daughter to get the help she so desperately needed. Once she came to my home and found me red eyed and crying hysterically because I hadn't slept in 3 days due to one of my daughter’s sensory flare-ups, (I was the only one my daughter would allow to hold her). Kelli had me sit and I remember her wrapping her arms around mine, helping me hold my daughter in my arms just so I could close my eyes for a while. In her very next visit she brought with her a sling she had fashioned so I could wear Angel close to me and be hands free. A simple concept but one that aided me tremendously over the years. Kelli celebrated with us, every success. She encouraged and was so creative and passionate in helping guide Angel out of any setbacks. I said all of that to say this...Kelli, you were the first person to give me hope when I didn’t believe there was any. One of my favorite quotes, by Maya Angelou states: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” You gave my daughter and I hope, friendship and a love that surpasses all understanding. I’m happy to say that today our Angel is thriving and living her best life. A large part of that is due to the love and commitment Kelli gave. Thank you, Kelli. For the past ten years, Kelli Scott has been a huge mentor and instructor for our preschool, Creative Learning Center. Her knowledge, experience, and love for helping individuals with all types of disorders was displayed in each continuing education class she taught at our school! The knowledge she gave us helped all the teachers to be able to adapt to all situations and give the best environment for all our children!! Kelli Scott, MS, OTR/L, CTP played a vital role in my professional life in being able to see what I was capable of at the young age of 18 as an intern in her brand new private practice. She mentored me in various settings and helped me better understand the importance of connecting with families before starting to address needs as an OT. As I graduated and started my career, Kelli continued mentoring me so I could learn first hand the interconnectedness of trauma, sensory integration and emotional regulation which was and is such a prevalent need in TN / SW VA. I have attended big and small workshops where Kelli lead various disciplines to better understand these concepts to ensure that even when herself or team of therapists weren’t there, the strategies could be carried over to affect change within those settings.
